Language Policy and Learning

Institute for Catalan Studies This is the benchmark institution for Catalan as a whole. It functions as the official Catalan Academy and Research Centre for all knowledge areas. Given its multidisciplinary nature, the IEC has five sections: History and Archaeology; Biological Sciences; Science and Technology; Philology, and Philosophy and Social Sciences.

Philology Unit at the Institute for Catalan Studies The Philology Unit functions as the Catalan Language Academy, undertakes scientific studies into the language, establishes language regulations, etc. In order to fulfil its duties, it comprises several different committees, including Lexicography, Grammar, etc.

UIB Language Advice Technical Committee (CTAL) This body reports to the Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics. It is responsible for providing guidelines and advice in line with authority granted to the UIB as the official institution for Catalan in the Balearic Statute of Autonomy. Its duties include issuing opinions on correct place names in accordance with the IEC, different language issues, etc. [It does not have its own website.]

UIBidiomes The centre at the University-Enterprise Foundation of the Balearic Islands (FUEIB) that provides face-to-face language courses and open examinations to cover current training needs for students seeking to learn a language or improve their level. All courses and exams align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

UIB Language Policy The office is governed by the Language Use Regulations and Language Plan. The UIB’s main aims in this field include promoting Catalan across all areas at the university; fostering multilingualism amongst the academic community; welcoming overseas students to the UIB, and providing language advice to other institutions.

Language and Culture Training Programme (FOLC) The FOLC designs and organises courses and open examinations for official accreditation to teach Catalan as a language subject, as well as other subjects taught in the co-official language of the Balearic Islands, up to higher education level.

Institute for Balearic Studies The institute reports to the Government of the Balearic Islands and promotes Catalan language and culture. Its activities include Catalan courses at all levels for the over-16s, language welcome workshops, etc.

Valencian Language Academy (AVL)This public institution reports to the Valencian government, sets Catalan language regulations for Valencia and ensures standardised use. Its responsibilities include setting correct place names and official titles in the autonomous region, etc.
