UIB Language Service Tools

  • Language Service Catalan Editing Criteria (2018) [PENDING UPDATE] Language Service Catalan Editing Criteria sets out language guidelines for all editors working at the UIB —either as members of the technical, management, and admin and services staff (PTGAS)— or as freelance collaborators. It aims to ensure the same criteria are applied across all documents produced at the university by setting out best editing practice and addressing different aspects of writing, including layout, spelling, morphology, syntax and vocabulary.
  • UIB Designations UIB Designations sets out the names of all UIB posts, governance and representation bodies, centres, departments, offices and services. All names are listed in Catalan, Spanish and English.
  • UIB Dictionary The UIB dictionary lists official UIB terms and definitions in Catalan, Spanish and English. It covers different areas, including administration, academic management, training and education. Alongside UIB Designations, the dictionary sets out the terms used across all university areas.

Language Tools from Different Institutions

  • Optimot. Language Queries Optimot is a comprehensive and flexible online service to solve queries about the use of Catalan. It includes a search tool for language queries comprising different sources, such as DIEC2, TERMCAT’s terminology dictionaries, a Spanish-Catalan dictionary and Optimot’s own terminology files, as well as a personalised support service.
  • Diccionari essencial de la llengua catalana (DEIEC) The official DEIEC dictionary lists 39,300 terms selected from the over 70,000 entries in the DIEC. It is aimed at the general public, contains guidelines on how to use different terms, and includes examples and collocations. The dictionary is a useful resource for writers, journalists, language teachers and students.
  • Cercaterm (TERMCAT Terminology Centre) This search engine enables users to access the largest Catalan terminology repository. It includes a comprehensive list of terms across all knowledge areas and provides equivalents in other languages —mainly Spanish, English and French—, as well as definitions, notes and occasional illustrations.
  • Diccionari català-valencià-balear (DCVB) The DCVB is a descriptive and etymological dictionary. It originally aimed to gather all Catalan vocabulary, and is therefore a testament to the way the language was spoken at the time of production. It covers a wide range of aspects beyond word meanings, including phonetic transcriptions for different regional varieties, etymological information, and related saying sand set phrases.
  • Diccionari etimològic i complementari de la llengua catalana (DECLC) This online version of the DECLC by the philologist Joan Coromines contains an alphabetical list of pdf documents of the original articles from the print edition, as well as search engine. The work contains exhaustive etymological, historical, critical and comparative entries for each word.
  • Enciclopèdia.cat (from the Grup Enciclopèdia) A portal comprising over 30 major works published by Grup Enciclopèdia, including numerous dictionaries and the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, as well as other resources (e.g. Història natural dels Països Catalans, Biosfera, Enciclopèdia de medicina i salut, Art de Catalunya and Història econòmica de la Catalunya contemporània).
  • Compendium.cat (legal language resources in Catalan) A portal that gathers and indexes legal language resources from the entire Catalan-speaking territory (Andorra, Catalonia, France, the Balearic Islands and Valencia). It includes writing and style guides, legal dictionaries and terminology notes, teaching guides, articles, blog entries, and legal and administrative document templates.
  • Nomenclatura de la gestió universitària (XVU) The terminology database from the Vives Network of Universities is a compilation of Catalan terms lacking an unequivocal English equivalent. These are researched by a group of English translators working at different language services across Network-member universities, who subsequently agree on similar terms in English and, where necessary, provide supplementary explanations. The project expands on a yearly basis with new terms and subject areas.
  • Legal Terminology (TERMCAT Legal Terminology Committee) The legal terminology portal search engine includes over 24,000 Catalan terms from different sources recommended by legal specialists. It is mainly aimed at experts from different areas of law who need to use specific terminology, as well as translators and language mediators who work with publishers, the media, universities, etc.

  • Llibre d’estil del Govern de les Illes Balears (2nd edition) (2006) This style guide has been produced and updated by a team of in-house linguists at the Government of the Balearic Islands. It is extremely useful for public employees at all levels of government in the region, academe and anyone interested in Catalan administrative terminology. The guide contributes to improving the regional government's operations and reputation.
